Ingredients
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 blend for juiciness, or your preferred ratio)
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper (or your favorite seasoning blend)
- Optional: garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, or Worcestershire sauce for extra flavor
For Serving:
- Burger buns
- Cheese slices (cheddar, American, or your favorite type)
- Toppings: lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, ketchup, mustard, mayo, etc.
Instructions
1. Prepare the Grill
- Preheat your grill to medium-high heat (375-400°F / 190-200°C).
- If using a charcoal grill, make sure the coals are glowing red with a light ash coating.
- Clean the grill grates thoroughly with a grill brush and oil them lightly to prevent sticking.
2. Shape the Patties
- Divide the ground beef into equal portions (about 4-6 oz per patty).
- Gently form the meat into patties about ¾-inch thick and slightly larger than the buns, as they’ll shrink while cooking.
- Press a small indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb to prevent them from puffing up as they cook.
3. Season the Patties
- Generously season both sides of the patties with salt and pepper, or your preferred seasoning blend. Avoid mixing the seasoning directly into the meat to maintain a tender texture.
4. Grill the Burgers
- Place the patties on the grill over direct heat.
- Cooking Times:
- Rare: 2-3 minutes per side (125°F internal temp)
- Medium-Rare: 3-4 minutes per side (135°F internal temp)
- Medium: 4-5 minutes per side (145°F internal temp)
- Well-Done: 5-6 minutes per side (160°F internal temp)
- Avoid pressing down on the burgers with a spatula, as this will squeeze out the juices.
5. Add Cheese (Optional)
- During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese on each patty. Close the grill lid to help it melt.
6. Toast the Buns (Optional)
- Lightly butter the insides of the burger buns and place them on the grill for 30-60 seconds until golden brown.
7. Rest the Patties
- Remove the patties from the grill and let them rest for 2-3 minutes. This helps the juices redistribute, keeping the burgers juicy.
8. Assemble the Burgers
- Place the patties on the toasted buns. Add your favorite toppings and sauces.
Tips for Success
- Use a Meat Thermometer: This ensures perfect doneness without cutting into the burgers.
- Don’t Overwork the Meat: Handle the beef gently to avoid dense patties.
- Keep a Close Eye on the Grill: Flare-ups can occur, so stay attentive.
- Experiment with Flavor: Try seasoning blends, stuffed patties, or gourmet toppings like caramelized onions or avocado.
Enjoy your perfectly grilled burgers! 🍔🔥
